Many historians trace the first Thanksgiving back to the Autumn of 1621, when Pilgrim settlers gathered with a local group of their Native Americans neighbors for a three-day feast to honor a wonderful and bountiful harvest season.
In reality, this celebration probably didn’t look quite like our ideas of what the modern Thanksgiving should be. In fact, Thanksgiving wasn’t an official holiday until more than 200 years later, when the national holiday of “Thanksgiving” started in 1863 by then-President Abraham Lincoln.
Over the decades, the look and traditions of the Thanksgiving holiday may have changed from time to time, but the foundation of “Thanks” has never altered.
The day of thanks has, and always will be, a time of family and fellowship, and a reminder that we all need to be grateful every day. It’s a time spent with family or visiting friends sharing shared history, stories, and traditional trimmings. It’s a celebration of our togetherness and, for all the sports fans, football.
The traditional joys of Thanksgiving can be celebrated anywhere, including right here at Kendal at Granville. Our residents enjoy the holiday like they always have without leaving the comfort and warmth of our bucolic 94-acre campus.
